Etiquette on the Course: Respecting Golf's Traditions at Greenock Whinhill

Golf has a long history of traditions and unwritten rules that form its culture. These aren't arbitrary restrictions—they exist to ensure everyone enjoys the game safely, fairly, and respectfully. As a member of Greenock Whinhill, understanding and following golf etiquette is part of being a good club member.

Pace of play:

One of the most important etiquette principles is keeping up with the group ahead of you. Slow play frustrates everyone behind you and spoils their enjoyment. Play your shot promptly, walk quickly between shots, and if you're falling behind, invite faster players through. Most courses expect 4-ball groups to complete a round in about 4 hours and 15 minutes.

Courtesy and respect:

Golf demands concentration. Stay quiet when others are hitting. Don't walk in their line of sight or stand close to them. Switch off your phone or set it to silent. Avoid loud conversations near the tees or greens. If you're playing poorly, keep it light-hearted—everyone has bad rounds. Never throw clubs or show anger on the course.

Repair and care of the course:

  • Repair your ball marks on the green promptly
  • Rake bunkers after playing from them
  • Don't drag your feet on greens
  • Replace divots in the fairway or use seed mix
  • Keep to designated pathways to avoid damaging rough areas

The course at Greenock Whinhill is maintained by our greenkeeping team, but members share responsibility for its care. Repairing damage shows respect for their work and keeps the course in good condition for everyone.

Safety:

Always be aware of other golfers. Don't play a shot if anyone is in range. Shout "fore!" immediately if your ball heads towards other players. Help others look for lost balls if you're nearby. Safety is everyone's responsibility.

Dress code:

Most golf clubs, including Greenock Whinhill, have dress codes. Generally, collared shirts are required, denim is discouraged, and proper golf shoes or trainers are expected. Check with the club about specific requirements. Dressing appropriately shows respect for the game and the club.

Behaviour in the clubhouse:

The clubhouse is a social space where members relax after their round. Be respectful of others, follow any rules about appropriate footwear, and be mindful of noise levels. The 19th hole (the bar) is where golf friendships are built.

Good etiquette makes golf more enjoyable for everyone. When you follow these traditions, you're part of golf's culture and contributing to the positive atmosphere at Greenock Whinhill.
